12/12/13: New aquaculture application; world's largest barramundi hatchery opens; omega-3 corporation closes plant

A new invention with global applications is being tested and marketed in Bonita Springs, Florida, USA.

Eric Steimle and his partner Kurt Kramer, owners of Larcos Aquaculture (also based in Florida) have invented a new way to accurately count the most minuscule of shrimp and at the same time, create clear photos of each of the creatures.

Following three years of research at the Vester Marine and Environmental Science Research Field Station (part of theFlorida Gulf Coast University) in Bonita Springs, the pair have secured a production and marketing contract for their invention from a company in Iceland.

MainStream Aquaculture of Werribee, Australia recently opened the world's largest Barramundi hatchery.

The hatchery, located in Lock Avenue, Werribee is set to export barramundi stock to 14 countries across four continents and produce seed stock that will account for almost half the global barramundi industry.

The hatchery was officially opened by Peter Walsh, minister of the state Agriculture and Food Security on Monday.

Omega-3 fish oil and protein production firm Omega Protein Corporation has announced plans to organise its Gulf of Mexico operations and increase efficiencies.

In order to achieve this, the company is closing its menhaden fish processing plant located in Cameron, Louisiana, USA.
