National Fish Day in Cambodia saw the release of 1 million fish to celebrate the launch of the country's national aquaculture institute.

The Research and Aquaculture National Institute is a government-funded organisation that sets its goal at producing up to 20 million fish per year.

“We hope this National Institute will succeed in producing fish births to meet people’s needs and maintain fish from extinction,” Chan Sarun, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said at the ceremony.
Fish populations are already on the rise, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of fish in Cambodian fisheries rose by 14 per cent.

An caged fish project in Kerala, India has been deemed a success after up to 80 kg of carp was caught in the first harvest.

The inland water  project, the first in the state in the Pookode Lake in Wayanad district, was launched by the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Bangalore, in association with the State Fisheries Department and aimed to draw attention to the potential of cage culture.

The seven-month project saw around 200 fingerlings grow to an average size of 500 g.

Fisheries experts, researchers and officials at a seminar in Bangladesh predicted that about 57 percent of the total fish production would come from aquaculture by the year 2014-15.

In 1972-73, the contribution of the aquaculture fish production was only 2 percent while it significantly raised to 53 percent in 2008-09 due to huge demand of fishes during the last three decades.
