Ocean Harvest Technology (OHT) was founded in 2005 by Dr. Stefan Kraan and Patrick Martin, and has grown from a single headquarters in Galway, Ireland to having a strong presence in North America, Asia, Europe and Australia.
According to the website information ‘This global reach supports the mission of the company to develop and provide a range of natural solutions to enhance the health of the animals, environment and the customer. OHT have created a variety of patented seaweed based formulas centred on the bioactive ingredients present in different seaweeds. These ingredients allow its feeds to replace many of the synthetic components found in a diversity of agricultural and aquacultural feed ingredients.’
InterTradeIreland have a technology transfer and innovation program, FUSION, which partners companies with a third-level institution providing them with the specialist expertise of a high calibre graduate working directly in the organisation to deliver a new product or process improvement project.
Through the FUSION program recently OHT have benefitted from the services of the University of Ulster and Dr. Simon Faulkner. Simon completed a project focused on creating sustainable fish feed for use in commercial aquaculture. Since this program was completed Simon has become Research and Development Manager of OHT and is continuing to pioneer research into new areas and concepts.
In accepting the award for ‘InterTradeIreland FUSION Project Exemplar’ Dr Stefan Kraan, Scientific Director, OHT said “This collaboration with FUSION has enabled us to take our project to the next level. Simon was a great asset to the business and instrumental in developing the project.  His project has assisted the company to develop new fish food products through the identification and analysis of protein rich seaweeds which should partially replace fish meal in fed aquaculture. Working closely with University of Ulster, Coleraine we received academic support and supervision throughout the duration of the program.”
