11/03/14: Fish Death Mystery Solved; Freedom for Oyster Farmers in Virginia due to New Aquaculture Bill

Recently concerns were raised of the mysterious death of 10,000 fish at a Newville trout hatchery. After further investigation into the matter, it has been determined that this is most likely the result of manure from local farmers contaminating fresh water sources. Typically the oxygen levels of the fresh spring water would level out at approximately 9 parts per million - but now it has been reduced to .5 parts per million. The owner Doug Holt has been attempting to open up a dialogue with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection - which has mostly been silent through this catastrophe.

The new House Bill 1089 approved by the General Assembly will provide oyster farmers with the opportunity to operate within agricultural districts. Removing the need for oyster farmers to obtain special permits in which to grow oysters on their property.
