17/12/13: Producing better catfish; net pen use in Washington; Ethiopia's seafood consumption

US catfish producers have been struggling lately as a result of a slow economy, high feed costs and fish imports from foreign countries.

In a bid to help out, scientists at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center in Mississippi, USA are looking at breeding, nutrition, genetics, and management practices to produce a better catfish.

Commissioners from Jefferson County, Alabama, USA recently approved a new Shoreline Master Plan concluding a process that began nearly three years ago. 

However, a ban on net pens is now dividing county and state officials. 

Back in 2011, the state's Department of Ecology approved the update of the county’s shoreline management program, except for a proposed ban on fin-fish aquaculture.

Ethiopia, the second biggest market in Africa with an estimated population of 85 million people is facing a seafood deficit. 

Currently, apart from dried catfish trade  in the north of the country, Ethiopia trades in frozen fish.
