09/12/13: Sustainable aquaculture in Shepherdstown; shrimp farm closes down due to theft; new cold store in Spain

Located off the back roads of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, USA lies a research lab which houses a tank filled with 40,000 gallons of water and 5,000 Atlantic salmon. 

The research lab is the beating heart of the Freshwater Institute - an internationally recognised program of The Conservation Fund.

Conducting research into sustainable aquaculture, the staff at the Freshwater Institute hatch salmon eggs and grow the salmon to harvest size. The fish are sold to a West Coast seafood marketer who ships them to restaurants in Toronto and British Columbia.

American shrimp farm Trans-Global Aquaculture Limited (a Jamaican operation owned by Trans-Global Products Inc) of has been placed in to liquidation following a long battle with thieves and water contamination.

Based at the mouth of the Rio Minho, Clarendon, Jamaica, Trans-Global put US$6 million into the company at start-up in order to sell shrimp to markets in the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Japan and Europe.

A cold store valued at one million Euros has opened in the Ningo-Prampram District, Ghana.

The facility boasts two refrigerated anterooms, a freezing tunnel, a flake ice factory, an ice bin, a standby generator, office and a water reservoir.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture on Tuesday opened a cold store valued at one million Euros at Prampram in the Ningo-Prampram District.
The Spanish funded facility has two refrigerated anterooms, one freezing tunnel, one flake ice factory, one ice bin, a standby generator, office and a water reservoir.
The facility, which is the first to be officially opened, is among six cold stores being built by the Ministry with funding by Spanish FAD.
