It is mainly used for the commercial purpose in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, nutritional and biotechnological industry.

Aquaculture is the fastest growing sector and accounts for about 50 percent of world's food fish.

It is pointed that aquaculture provides protein-rich food and is most efficient than any other production system.

For healthy aquaculture, high-quality feeds should be used by the farmers.

New technological advancement in the field of aquaculture will help to expand the aquaculture feed and pharmaceutical market, as it has the wide range of applications in food and pharmaceutical industry.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is an agency regulated by law for the sale and distribution of animal feed and animal therapeutic drugs.

The art of aquaculture is ancient and remained isolated in historical past. In 2500 B.C, Egyptians were first to culture fish, some Romans, Chinese, and Indians had described the methods of fishing.

Different type of fish requires different feed with different essential nutrients.

In farmed fish cultivation, fishmeal and fish oil is included in the diet as it is the natural source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a combination of 40 nutrition are essential for healthy fish breeding.

Aquaculture represents around 50 percent of production cost. Nowadays development of species specific diet is supporting the aquaculture market. Aquaculture feeds are available in different sizes (pellets) because each aqua animals has different feeding rate, frequency, and timing.

Various oxygen tablets and probiotic tablets are also available in the market. Fish usually stop eating during bacterial disease progression. If a bacterial disease is detected then medicated feed is the best option to be used as the therapeutic drug.

Continuous advancement in the field of aquaculture has the potential to expand the variety of species for both restoration and commercial drives.

In 2004, China aquaculture production was about 70 percent of the total fisheries production. It is estimated that by 2020, global aquaculture will contribute about 120 million tonnes of fish to meet the demand of growing population.

Growing focus to increase the production of marine species will reflect, trend to increase in reliance on aqua feed. Global aquaculture feed and the pharmaceutical market is segmented into products type, feed type, animal type, and Geography.

Based on the product type aquaculture feed and pharmaceutical market is sub segmented into amino acids, antibiotics, oxygen tablets, probiotic tablets, feed acidifiers, and vitamins.

Based on the Feed type, the global feed and the pharmaceutical market is segmented into extruded feeds and pressure-pelleted feeds.

Based on the animal type global aquaculture feed and pharmaceutical market is sub segmented into carp, shrimp, salmon, catfish, crustaceans, mollusks, and tilapia. In 2008, it was estimated that global commercial aquaculture feed was about 29.2 million tonnes.

In 2006, 48 percent of aquaculture feed production in Europe was contributed by Norway.

By regional presence, the global aquaculture feed and the pharmaceutical market is segmented into five broad regions, North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East & Africa.

According to Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, Asia's fed aquaculture excluding China accounts for about 64.2 percent.

The Asian region has contributed robustly in the marine sector. In 2012, the global demand for aqua feed accounted 65 percent from Asia Pacific.

Asia-Pacific aquaculture feed and the pharmaceutical market is expected to witness the fastest growth during the forecast period. Regions present in Rest of the World is supposed to grow significantly within the forecast period.

Favourable governmental regulations for aquaculture, increasing demand for aquaculture is expected to enhance the global market for aquaculture feed in the near future.
