05/12/13: Trade ministers join overfishing initative; Thailand's fatal shrimp disease; celebrities pose to end deep sea trawling

An initiative to freeze subsidies that encourage overfishing has been praised by global environmental organisation the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

In a recent joint release, trade ministers from Argentina, Australia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Iceland, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines and the United States committed their aim to stop the introduction of subsidies that contribute to overfishing.

According to the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), Thailand's agricultural economy is expected to expand only slightly this year as a result of dry weather and an influx of fatal shrimp disease early mortality syndrome (EMS). 

Yukol Lim-laemthong, Thailand's agriculture minister suggested that EMS was the main cause for the 7.2% contraction in Thailand's fisheries sector.

Fishlove, a non-profit community interest company recently announced a new campaign that will see fish and marine conservation issues on the front covers of newspapers and magazines worldwide.

The campaign is a way of promoting the company's petition - Stop the industrial destruction of the deep sea ocean -  which is addressed to the leaders of the European Parliament in order to encourage them to phase out the most destructive fishing practices in the northeast Atlantic, particularly deep-sea bottom trawling.
