04/12/13: Tilapia tops the menu in Mexico; salmon quota reductions in Poland; Iceland's eco-friendly seafood cooperative

Tilapia is quickly becoming a staple of the Mexican diet as a result of sustainable growth.
This was the news shared by Kevin Fitzsimmons, an international expert on aquaculture issues at the University of Arizona (UA), USA during the recent Fisheries and Aquaculture Economic Forum in Mexico city.
Fitzsimmons touched on the support offered to tilapia producers from the Mexican government, which enables this increase in domestic consumption as well as export to overseas markets.

According to the European Commission, Poland faces a reduction regulation that will reduce the approved annual salmon catches allocated to the country.
The regulation has been put in place to allow recovery of the country's salmon quota after the species was overfished by local fishermen in 2012.
It is believed overfishing was due to fishermen misreporting salmon catches as sea trout. Although a closely related species to salmon, there is currently no EU annual quota for sea trout caught in the Baltic sea.

A new cooperative website has been launched by ten Icelandic Ocean technology firms with the aim of promoting eco-friendly solutions for fisheries and fish processing.
The new website - greenmarinetechnology.is -  allows users to explore a virtual world of eco-friendly technology solutions and how they are used in fisheries around the world.
