Major aquaculture producer Marine Harvest has bought £65 million of shares in Grieg Seafood. As a result of this Marine Harvest now owns one-quarter of its Norwegian-based rival, making this a major piece of consolidation in the global fish farming industry.

Fisheries scientists in Mangalore, India have found more evidence that aquaculture can bring benefits beyond simple seafood output. A recent study determined that having an on-site aquaculture pond improved the productivity of crops such as paddy and sugarcane, grown in adjacent fields, by reducing soil salinity and alkalinity.

An albacore tuna tagged by scientists off the coast of Spain in 2006 has been caught by a fisherman in Venezuela some 6,370 km away. The well-travelled tuna has set a new record for the longest distance covered by its species, which are believed to cross the Atlantic Ocean only rarely. It’s come a long way in seven years: weighing a svelte 2.5 kg when it was tagged, it bulked out to over 20 kg by the time of its capture.
