Since 2013, Aker BioMarine, the leading supplier of krill-derived products to the consumer health and animal nutrition markets, reports a solid 20% year-on-year volume growth in Qrill(TM) Aqua, the Antarctic krill meal used in feeds for shrimp, marine fish and salmonids.
"The reason for this growth is the proven benefits the product brings for the farmers," says Dr Lena Burri, Director R&D, Animal Nutrition and Health at Aker BioMarine.
"Antarctic krill is rich in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are important contributors to good health for both animals and humans. Krill meal is also an excellent source of the natural antioxidant astaxanthin, which gives higher stability to feed omega-3 fatty acids and limits cellular damage. Fish fed on diets containing Qrill(TM) have better fillet quality, improved fat distribution and higher yield," Dr Burri explains.
Qrill(TM) feed has been thoroughly tested in both shrimp and salmon and the results are clear in that krill-fed animals eat more and grow faster than those in the control group. Commercial scale trials reported by the feed producer BioMar also find that salmon fed with krill meal had more and firmer muscle, as well as a significant reduction in melanin spots.
In the Asia-Pacific region, Aker BioMarine offers Qrill(TM) Aqua to customers in major aquaculture countries, such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan and across Southeast Asia and Australia.
"Antarctic krill has proven to be very effective in reducing costly feed ingredients, including fishmeal, soybean lecithin, cholesterol and fish oil, as well as enhancing feed intake and accelerating shrimp growth in fishmeal-challenged diets. Data demonstrates that it is possible to reduce formula cost and accelerate the growth of whiteleg shrimp through low dietary inclusions of krill meal, even when adopting diets with little or no inclusion of fishmeal and high levels of plant proteins", says Dr Alberto Nunes, Professor at LABOMAR Institute, Fortaleza, Brazil.
