Roger Gilbert, CEO of International Aquafeedmagazine (pictured), is to address the Monaco Blue Initiative tomorrow.

As the Initiative's own website will tell you, a quarter of the world's population now depends on seafood for sustenance and income.Aquaculture production has more than doubled globally since the turn of the century. Marine plant production has also increased significantly, especially in the East.

But how will this affect the environment and society? This is the question asked by the theme for this year's edition of the Monaco Blue Initiative: 'Feeding and fuelling the world through sustainable aquaculture?'

The Initiative, now in its 6th edition, will open tonight at the Yacht Club of Monaco with Mission Blue, a film by world-renowned marine biologist Dr Sylvia Earle.

The first session tomorrow morning will see Roy Palmer of the Association of International Seafood Professionals take part in a panel discussion titled 'Aquaculture to feed the world.'

Roger Gilbert will then be joined by Pierre Erwes of Biomarine, Vegar Johansen, President of SINTEF and Marc Metian, aquaculture research scientist at AIEA to consider 'New frontiers for aquaculture.'
