Dr Kyoko Kusakabe has just informed Aquaculture without Frontiers of the unfortunate and sad loss of Paula Kantor, a champion of gender in development.

The following is an extract of the message from the Director General of WorldFish Centre concerning the sad loss of Paula Kantor, a gender and development expert who was recently working at the Centre. Paula was a co-author on one of the papers at GAF5 but was not able to attend in person.

"It is with great sadness that I must communicate the tragic loss of former staff member Paula Kantor, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.

"At the time of her death, Paula was working with CIMMYT, leading an ambitious new project to empower and improve the livelihoods of women, men and youth in wheat-based systems of Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Pakistan.

"Paula cared deeply about the people of Afghanistan and had spent many years there promoting the livelihoods of women and children in her time before WorldFish.

"Many of you will have known Paula for her leadership in gender research at WorldFish. She was a great champion for gender equality and a science leader who was committed, passionate and hard working.

"Her clear vision was a great driver for the gender transformative approach that remains a key pillar in Worldfish’s work. Her commitment to improving the livelihoods of women in some of the world’s most impoverished regions will be her legacy. Paula’s passing is a loss to the whole development community."
