The Department of Primary Industries is warning it will be targeting illegal abalone diving over summer after a man was caught allegedly diving for abalone on the New South Wales far south coast, reports ABC News in Australia.ii

The Sydney man will face court after he was spotted diving in a remote part of the Mimosa Rocks National Park south of Bermagui.

The 44-year-old has been charged with trafficking abalone and possession of shucked abalone.

The department says fisheries officers saw the man swimming off the coastline in the national park.

After he left, they found a bag containing 248 shucked abalone hidden in plants near the water.

He allegedly returned to collect the catch later that day and his dive gear and the abalone were seized.

People on the far south coast are being urged to report suspected abalone theft by calling the Fishers Watch hotline on 1800 043 536.
