The Mayor of San Sebastián and the President of the European Aquaculture Society welcomed delegates to Aquaculture Europe this evening in San Sebastián, Spain. The Mayor of San Sebastián, Juan Karlos Izagirre, addressed attendees in Basque accompanied by an English translator. He spoke fondly of San Sebastián - which is to be the European Capital of Culture 2016 - and encouraged us to enjoy the gastronomic culture which it is known for.
The President of EAS, Kjell Maroni, explained that EAS has provided a bridge between science and the aquaculture society since 1976 and put forward the notion that 'science is not only for the benefit of scientists' which is a truly relevant remark within this industry.
Once the welcome speeches had concluded we were treated to an example of a typical Basque sport. Inaxio Perurena, who is well-known weightlifter round these parts, put on an incredible display of strength, picking up 200kg then 250kg "rocks" with out so much as breaking into a sweat.
Once he even managed 200kg with his right hand only we leant! These feats of strength were met with cheers and then came drinks and nibbles which were enjoyed in the foyer of the Kursaal.
The event starts in earnest tomorrow. Each delegate attending has been provided with a copy of IAF in Spanish. English copies of the magazine are available on our stand in the exhibition hall.
